Although French and Tahitian are the official languages, locals in the tourist areas and shops speak some English. If in doubt, bring an English/French phrase book. Greetings of "bonjour" or "ia ora na" (Tahitian) are usually met with a smile, and thank you ("merci" or the Tahitian "mauruuru") goes a long way.

Mana is a life force and spirit that surrounds us. And from the moment you arrive, you will understand why locals say their islands are Embraced by Mana. We had lounge chairs under the swaying palm tress protected from the sun. We bought and learned how to tie a pareo which I wore for the rest of the trip. And then the next day another private beach in Bora Bora. Step into a vibrant, colorful world in bright and beautiful Moorea, which welcomes you with azure lagoons, impossibly fresh tropical fruits, stunning mountain peaks and palm-fringed beaches.
Insider's Travel Guide to Tahiti: 5 Tips for Traveling in Tahiti
From motu picnics and lagoon catamaran sailings to black pearl farm tours and safari adventures, our South Pacific shore excursions bring you the best of the local culture, natural beauty and cuisine. Extended evening stays and overnights across the region give you the chance to more fully embrace the iconic wonders and island life with explorations ashore and leisurely, meaningful touring. Ultimately, the island of Tahiti offers more activities, resorts and restaurants than its neighboring small islands. Beyond busy Papeete are museums, beaches and water sports options located on or just off the island's one coastal road. Even if your ship overnights in Tahiti, it's worth arriving a couple of days early to explore or simply relax at a resort perched at the edge of the lagoon. After your cruise, if you haven't done everything you intended to do in paradise, you can make up for it here on a post-cruise stay.
Unique and authentic cruises
You didn't prepare me for THIS part of the trip!! Husband and I and our two grown daughters were on the August sailing of the lovely ship Paul Gauguin. We had two "E" Category staterooms, non balcony which was fine since we were not in the room all that much. The stateroom was actually larger than we expected, with lovely furnishings, colors, good towels and sheets. Besides the American items, we found French flavor and Pacific Rim options as well as fresh fish and healthy options. Our family all have some diet limitations not to mention trying to stay away from the stuff that makes the statement, everyone gains weight on a cruise.
Night Hawaii Tahiti & MarquesasDetails
We took home some information on the Moana which I believe starts the end of the year. We would like to do the Panama Canal sailing the first of the year and will clear our calendars and give you a call. Thank you Linda, you have been a joy to work with.

In Tahiti, places of interest are identified by a 'number' location, rather than a street address. Locals us the PK, or "point kilometre" system on the main road that circles the island. The distance marker numbers increase from that point as you drive along either the west or east coast. The PK numbers climb to PK 55 on the west coast road and to PK 60 on the east coast road until they join at the junction with Tahiti Iti, at a town called Taravao.
